ELECTRICIAN’S GUIDE TO CONTROL AND MONITORING SYSTEMS

Electrical and electronic system control and monitoring is highly critical to many industries, such as the pharmaceutical, petrochemical, engineering, and automotive industries. Electricians in this field are required to constantly update their skill set to keep up with the expanding scope of work and changing technologies. To help these professionals meet the increasing demands, industry veteran Albert F. Cutter, Sr., has written Electrician’s Guide to Control and Monitoring Systems: Installation, Troubleshooting, and Maintenance (McGraw-Hill; May 2010; Original paperback: $34.95).

This practical guide walks its readers through the ladder diagrams and control devices of networked monitoring systems; and focuses on installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance. Ladder diagrams are broken down and rebuilt, making it easy to understand the symbols and language used in them. Hundreds of product photos and line drawings illustrate key details, and additional drawings are available online. Essential for electrical contractors, electricians, and maintenance workers, this on-the-job resource also contains information on networks used in the field.

“Albert Cutter has done an outstanding service for our industry by developing a hands-on reference and training tool in his new work, Electrician’s Guide to Control and Monitoring Systems,” writes Michael I. Callanan, executive director, National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC), in the foreword.

Electrician's Guide to Control and Monitoring Systems contains:
• Coverage of the 2008 National Electrical Code
• Detailed drawings and pictures convey details in a simple and understandable manner

-more-
• Step-by-step explanations of the drawings
• Presents information on networks used in the field and the requirements for proper installation
• Focus on installation and maintenance, not design

I am back sorry I was gone for a long time

Hi Everyone.
I know that it has been a long time since I have been here. Sorry. I have been very busy writing the new books. I am doing a lot of research on the new books so that they will be relevant works. The second book “The Electrician’s Green Handbook” is being written for electrical students that want to learn about alternative energy. It is full of my original drawings and spends a lot of time on the NEC 2008 code. The third book “Electrician’s Guide to Alternative Energy” is another book in my series for electricians by and electrician. It too is in the works and full of my drawings and NEC 2008 code.
The most exciting news is that the first book “Electrician’s Guide to Control and Monitoring Systems” is now shipping and doing wonderful. It is #1 on Amazon’s Hot New Releases. To all of you that have purchased the book I give you a big thank you. I humbly ask you to please go to Amazon and review the book. This will help other electricians in the selection of the book for their library. If any of you would like to send me a comment on my books I have set up a special email address for that. Please feel free to contact me at books@itddms.com. Also I am now on Facebook so if you are there friend me I can use all the friends that I can get.
If this is not enough I am currently writing programs for Smartphone. Yes I have started a new company called AppsDev L.L.C. Checkout our new website at www.appsdev1.com. We will be launching our fist application for the Android phones in mid to late May.
To all you brother and sister electricians please look for the May issue of the Electrical Worker. The IBEW was kind enough to do a little piece on me in the May Issue. The article is available online at www.ibew.org Look for the Electrical Worker.
I would like send a special thank you to my brother and friend Joseph V. Egan - Business Manager local 456 IBEW for all his help and encouragement with my writing and to Michael I. Callanan Executive Director of the NJATC for writing the foreword for my book. Without their help I would never have made #1 at Amazon.

William Stanley Jr. (November 28, 1858-May 14, 1916)

William Stanley Jr. was an American-born physicist, born in Brooklyn, New York.
During his career he was granted 129 patents for various electrical devices.
One of the most significant patents was in 1885 for the Induction Coil, Patent No. 349,611, which was the predecessor to the transformer.
He was known as the American Electrician. His first job was as electrician with one of the early manufactures telegraph keys and fire alarms. Stanley designed one of the first electrical installations at a Fifth Avenue, New York store. Shortly after that he was hired by George Westinghouse to be his chief engineer at his Pittsburgh facility. On March 20, 1886 Stanley demonstrated the first complete high-voltage alternating current (AC) power distribution system. His system allowed for the distribution of electric power over wide areas. It consisted of generators, transformers and high-voltage transmission lines.
In Great Barrington, Massachusetts he used his system to light offices and stores along Main Street. This was the location of his families West Avenue home.
Stanley was the first person to make a practical electrical transformer. This was the prototype for all future transformers and his AC distribution system that was the model for our modern electric power distribution systems.
In 1890 Stanley founded the Stanley Electric Manufacturing Co. in Pittsfield Massachusetts. Controlling interest in the company was purchased in 1903 by the General Electric Corp.

Al

Al has always had a passion for all things electrical and electronic. Both his grandfathers where electricians and they taught him at a young age about the trade. When he was young his grandfather played a joke on him and shocked him with a meggar. You might say that he has electricity in his blood.
As a young man of 10 or 11 years he opened a business from his parents basement repairing electrical appliances, radios and TVs. As a student at New Brunswick Vocational and Technical High School Al started AFC Electronics where he designed a device to receive police and fire radio calls over the car radio. Al's father was a policeman and this allowed him to receive calls in his personal vehicle.
After graduation he followed his dream and became an electrician. After completing a 5 year apprenticeship Al was asked to teach the last year of the apprenticeship course, where for 5 years he taught Advanced AC Theory; Automated Control and Electronics.
After designing many systems as a electrician Al went on to establish his company as a electrical panel design and fabrication business. Where he designed, fabricated and installed his panels in companies in USA and around the world.
Al needed a system that would make wire pulling safer and more efficient. He could not find one so he invented one, receiving his first conclusive patent in 1981.
As technology advanced Al became an Allen Bradley Programmable Logic Controller expert. He designed and implement systems for major corporations across the country.
Never wanting to stand still Al sought expert training in Bogen Sound Systems, Edwards Fire Alarm Systems, RCA Video and Security Systems. RCA recommend Al to a Casino in Aruba where he became Chief of Security for King International Casinos in Aruba.
As technology advanced to computer systems he sought knowledge of computers. Self taught in many computer languages, lead him to seek opportunities in the computer field.
Al was asked to teach a course in Automated Industrial Control systems for a local Community College, which he did for three years. As a adjunct Professor he applied for and received a State and Federal Grant to develop a course in Automated Control and Computer Assisted Drafting systems.
Al has designed systems all over the world, Document managements systems in the US and Ger-many for companies like Johnson & Johnson, Roche Pharmaceuticals and General Felt. Al took his expertise to Asia where he spend over 4 years designing network systems connecting companies all over Asia together on a common system. While there he spent a lot of time in Taiwan and China, he taught the Chinese people computer systems and technology. Traveling around the world.
Al developed and programmed the Intuitive Technologies software to manage all types of digital data. He has several patents pending for this work. www.looking-for-it.com
Al has now decided to share his knowledge with the world by writing a series of self-help books. Al has often stated, "The only knowledge worth having is the knowledge that you share"

Power Transmission Grid

I have had many offline discussions about the power transmission grid. These discussions have been very interesting and I have decided to add a Chapter to cover the power grid in the current book Alternative Energy. I will attempt to cover the many types of power transmission currently being used. I will also have a discussion of the past grid configurations. I will include as much as I can on the new Smart Grid Technology being proposed by GE and IBM and others. Please feel free to leave me your comments on this topic. As always keep those emails coming.

Thanks to William I have found the commercial that says the only half the power the is produced reaches a light bulb. You can see it at the link below.

I do not know the source of the information and I am trying to source it out this is a very bold claim.

“Today's scientists have substituted mathematics for experiments, and they wander off through equation after equation, and eventually build a structure which has no relation to reality.”

Nikola Tesla, Modern Mechanics and Inventions, July, 1934
US (Serbian-born) electrical inventor (1857 - 1943)

I am happy to say that the first book Control and Monitoring Systems is getting nothing but positive reviews from the publishers and I have several firm offers to publish the book and hope to have a few more soon. Those of you waiting for your copy of the book it will be published soon.
